Silver Thiosulfate Safety & Material Data Sheets (MSDS)

STS is an active chemical reagent prepared from silver nitrate and sodium thiosulfate. Adherence to laboratory safety protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE), and proper waste mitigation ensures both breeding success and facility safety.

01 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

STS compounding and spraying require proper personal protection. The silver thiosulfate complex contains active silver ions that stain skin on contact (causing temporary argyria spots) and can cause severe ocular irritation.

  • Eye Protection: Always wear ANSI-rated safety goggles to shield eyes from aerosolized mist when executing foliar spray applications.
  • Respiratory Protection: Wear an N95 particulate respirator mask to prevent inhalation of chemical dust during dry powder compounding.
  • Skin Protection: Wear heavy-duty nitrile gloves (preferably double-barrier) and Tyvek full-body coveralls to prevent contact and permanent skin staining.

02 Workspace Isolation & Spill Mitigation

Silver nitrate causes permanent black stains on surfaces, concrete, clothing, and wood when exposed to light. Spill control and surface isolation are critical for facility hygiene.

  • Surface Coverage: Work exclusively over a heavy-duty green protective drop cloth or secondary containment tray to capture drips and splatters.
  • Runoff Mitigation: Apply sprays selectively to the target branches. Prevent chemical runoff from entering the soil or root zone, as silver ions inhibit plant root respiration and will stunt development.
  • Spill Cleanup: In the event of a spill, immediately flush the area with water or a sodium thiosulfate neutralizing solution, and clean with disposable towels. Dispose of cleaning waste in facility hazard receptacles.

03 Storage & Chemical Stability Controls

The active silver thiosulfate complex ([Ag(S2O3)2]3-) is highly photolytic and thermosensitive. Chemical degradation reduces reagent effectiveness and creates unwanted oxidation.

  • Light Protection: Exposure to light triggers photolytic reduction, precipitating black silver sulfide particles and rendering the spray inert. Always store STS solution in UV-shielded amber glass bottles.
  • Temperature Controls: Store dry chemical packets at room temperature. Once dissolved into liquid form, store ready-to-use solutions in a refrigerator at 4°C. refrigerated solutions retain active potency for 90 days.
  • Hazard Labeling: Clearly label all chemical storage containers with the formulation date, concentration, and prominent hazard warning labels to prevent accidental ingestion or mixing errors.
